Andean Condor.


Scientific name: Vultur gryphus.
Family: Cathartidae.
Length: 130 cm.
Distribution: along the Andes mountain range.
ID: huge carrion prey. Black with white feathers on the wings and white collar. The bald head is black and pink for females and males with a crest.


The Andean condor is the world's largest predator. It has a wingspan of three meters, weighs over 13 kilograms, and is also one of the most-lived because very often they reach age 50. Its huge size and its growth paused also have a slow reproductive cycle, reaching sexual maturity after eight years. The female breeding in alternate years, and hence, stocks are recovering slowly from the threats of man. Mating takes place in spring, and put the egg in a single outgoing rocky, surrounded by some branches. Both parents incubated the egg and take care of small, but that I could fly to six months, remains with the parents up to two years. The Andean condor is fed almost exclusively on carrion, but can capture live prey like rodents and reptiles, or offspring and animals dying. Also as eggs of other birds, especially the navies that nest in large colonies.
